Water Works Park

It takes no time at all for a disc golfer to get excited when stepping up to the first tee at the Water Works Park Disc Golf Course. Besides the challenge of throwing downhill to any of the four placements, the astounding view of the downtown skyline and the Missouri River together with the stunning beauty of the park itself is guaranteed to get all but the most jaded golfer’ s heart beating fast. Designed in 1996 by Ace Mason and Jim Kreeger, Water Works was the first of four Kansas City disc golf courses funded by the Public Improvements Advisory Committee, which doles out tax revenues to worthy community projects. Since its installation, Water Works has become a favorite of many Kansas City golfers as well as a multitude of visiting golfers—both pros and ams. Featuring lush grass, mature trees, and elevation changes on most of the holes, the course, even when maxed out, is not particularly long by modern standards. However it still demands precision from the tee and knowledge of landing angles. Touching down at too steep of an angle can occasionally cause a disc to skip and roll a long ways—only rarely in the intended direction. A player suffering one of these rollaways has been “ Water Worked” —a phenomenon well known to most local players.
