Wyandotte County Park (WYCO)

Wyandotte County Park in Bonner Springs is home to what is affectionately called WyCo Disc Golf Course. WyCo was established permanently in 2001 after being used as the home of the previous year’s club championships with a temporary layout. The course was initially installed using nine tone poles that were the creation of Max Hilgers. Once the existing Mach IIIs were purchased the back nine went in and the course came to life as the longest course in town for several years until Blue Valley was installed. The initial design and installation was a club project spearheaded by Mike Wesley, who was also the first course coordinator. The course was essentially designed by committee. Many people in the KCFDC had a part in the layout, including Mike Wesley and Ace Mason and several of the initial holes used during the club championship temp layout were included and still exist, #10 and #17 come to mind.

The course is moderately long to very long depending on pin placements, playing as short as 7054′ and as long as 8949′. Though longer temp pins have been used during tournament play. Water comes into play on hole #14, woods on several but lots of long fairly open shots using elevation and tree lines. Three nice wide tunnel shots through large trees as well. Over the years the course has had 6’x15′ concrete tee pads, tee signs and high quality benches added. It has found its place as a favorite disc golf destination for many in the Kansas City Area and beyond and has seen such events as several Kansas City Wide Opens, the 2003 Am Worlds and the 2009 Pro/Am Worlds. It is also home to the early season C Tier – Kan-U-WyCo. On Friday evenings during the summer the weekly mini can achieve the sublime with great golf, beautiful weather and most of all friendly and enthusiastic disc golfers.
